Crossrail 2 update moves project forward
Crossrail 2 has moved a step closer to commencing work, it has claimed following the publication of updated plans to take the scheme forward.
Since the last consultation on the proposals for the project, Crossrail 2 has been working to develop the scheme, including carrying out further design work to define the necessary infrastructure needed to build and operate the railway, and to explore the key issues raised in the 2015 consultation.
Following feedback from the consultation, it is looking at ways to reduce the impact of its proposals across the whole of the route.
Although no final decisions have been made, work remains ongoing and Crossrail 2 has said that it has made progress in the areas where particularly high levels of community concern were received.
A number of alternative options for providing a Crossrail 2 station at Wimbledon have been reviewed, while seeking to minimise the impact on the town centre; and the benefits of a station at Tooting Broadway compared to Balham have been reviewed, along with considering how to construct the station in the difficult ground conditions.
Crossrail 2 and Network Rail have been collaborating on how to integrate the new Euston St. Pancras station with Euston station to improve interchanges with national rail and future HS2 services.
A number of level crossings south of Wimbledon and north of Tottenham Hale will likely be permanently closed as they would be “impractical to retain”, and so options to mitigate each level crossing closure, such as bridges or underpasses, are being developed.
In order to mitigate the impact of the construction of the railway, a detailed Code of Construction Practice (CoCP) is being developed, setting out new guidelines around noise and vibration, hours of work and community liaison procedures.
An Environmental Impact Assessment is being implemented to minimise a range of potential environmental effects such as air pollution and water quality.
There will be a further route-wide public consultation on the latest proposals following the outcome of the Independent Affordability Review, announced in March, and decisions on the updated Strategic Outline Business Case.
