Extra cycle spaces for Greater Anglia station

A new £190,000 secure cycle compound will be officially launched today at Bishop’s Stortford Station.

Jointly funded by Abellio Greater Anglia and Hertfordshire County Council, the scheme increases the storage capacity at the station to 238 spaces. A cycle hire scheme is also due to be launched, to encourage more people to travel sustainably to and from the station.

Terry Douris, cabinet member for highways, said: “Where possible we want to encourage people to use sustainable forms of transport to access stations and in particular, in line with our recent Active Travel Strategy, to cycle more.

“We are therefore happy to help fund this project with Greater Anglia and hope it will encourage more commuters to begin their journey with a cycle ride, keeping them fit and healthy, reducing congestion on our roads and lowering carbon emissions.”

Andrew Goodrum, customer service director for Abellio Greater Anglia, said: “We are really pleased to be working with Hertfordshire County Council on this project at the station. This scheme is part of the significant improvements we are making at the station including upgrading security, access and information provision. We are also working closely with the council to explore other opportunities to further improve the station forecourt and transport integration as part of a future, separate scheme.”
