CAF signs €200m Caledonian Sleeper contract

Spanish train manufacturer CAF has signed a €200m agreement to supply 75 coaches to Serco Caledonian Sleepers Ltd.

The new coaches, which will be introduced into service in April 2018, will be of five different types, formed into four trains of 16 coaches, plus 11 spare coaches for the franchise, operating the Highland and Lowland services.

The coaches will provide a mixture of travel options including, en-suite berths, standard berths, standard seats and POD seat.

The project is being funded with £60m from the Scottish Government, with additional financing being provided by Caledonian Sleepers Rail Leasing Ltd, a subsidiary of Lombard North Central Plc.

In May 2014, Transport Scotland selected Serco to run the 15-year franchise of the Caledonian Sleeper overnight service, which connects Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William in Scotland with London.
