CAF opens new storage and train overhaul facility in Manchester

CAF Rail UK has opened a new multi-purpose component overhaul and storage facility in Stockport to support its growing operations in the UK.

Half of the unit will hold spare parts to service existing and future UK contracts and will supply four of the Spanish-based firm’s maintenance areas around the country, in Manchester, Liverpool, and Glasgow.

The central stores of the parts require 10 employees to maintain the area, with over half being appointed already.

The second half of the unit will accommodate a rolling stock overhaul facility due to create 22 new jobs, but this is only scheduled to come into service in 2021 to service won contracts for trains not yet in the network.

The rolling stock and central stores facility is being housed in a 4,382sqm unit at the newly completed Aurora industrial and warehouse scheme next to Junction 1 of the M60. The unit is leased from developer Stockport Council.

David Lowe, general manager at CAF Rail UK, commented: “This is a brand-new extension of CAF’s UK business and demonstrates the company's commitment to servicing our existing and new contracts and allows for continued business opportunities and growth.

“The central stores will service new contracts that go into service this year and going forward.

“Our intention is to develop the overhaul facility earlier than 2021 should CAF secure new contracts in the interim and there is an opportunity to utilise the service sooner.”
