UITP launches international campaign for public transport
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Transport for London (TfL) have spoken out in support for greater investment in public transport ahead of the International Association for Public Transport (UITP)’s report tomorrow.
‘All together for public transport growth’ is an international movement to highlight the economic, environmental, and social benefits of public transport. Launched to coincide with European Mobility Week, the UITP will publish the final results of the campaign.
The campaign focuses on vision, energy efficiency, growth, dynamic economics and innovation across the world for public transport.
Cllr Andrew Fender, chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “It is excellent that so many authorities from such a broad spectrum of nations have joined together under this scheme to raise awareness of the plethora of benefits that public transport can bring to society.
“Provided with the right conditions, public transport can thrive and offer benefits such as reducing traffic congestion, increasing road safety, fostering social inclusion, reducing pollution and encouraging economic growth.
“TfGM is firmly on the front foot when it comes to developing and implementing projects that drive home these benefits across our region.”
Sir Peter Hendy CBE, London’s Transport Commissioner and UITP President, said: “It is vital that investment is made in transport infrastructure in cities to boost not only the economy of the city it serves but also that of the whole country, and we can clearly see that in London with the jobs and growth created not only in London but nationwide.
“The UITP aims to create joined up thinking across the globe to deliver successful urban transport systems and we can learn from other cities as well as share our knowledge of London and the successes we have already delivered, and are committed to continue to deliver, for the benefit of the capital and indeed the whole country.”
