Alstom has strengthened its presence in the Nordic rail market after securing a new order from Västtrafik for 35 additional Avelia Stream Nordic X80 trains, following the exercise of an option within an existing framework agreement.
The latest contract, valued at approximately €350 million, takes the total number of trains ordered by the Swedish regional transport authority to 80 units, marking another significant milestone in the modernisation of regional rail services across western Sweden.
The order comes shortly after the successful introduction into passenger service of the first Avelia Stream Nordic trains, underlining Västtrafik's confidence in Alstom's capability to deliver both new rolling stock and long-term maintenance support.

The additional trains will support Västtrafik's long-term strategy to increase network capacity, improve punctuality and encourage greater use of sustainable public transport throughout the Västra Götaland region.
Designed specifically for challenging Scandinavian operating conditions, the Avelia Stream Nordic X80 offers a maximum operating speed of 200 km/h and accommodates 270 passengers across a three-car formation.
Passenger-focused features include:
- Step-free boarding
- Dedicated wheelchair spaces
- Areas for pushchairs and strollers
- Modern real-time passenger information systems
The trains recently received international recognition after winning the 2025 Red Dot Award for design, reflecting the combination of Nordic functionality, contemporary interiors and advanced rail technology.
A key feature of the Avelia Stream Nordic platform is its ability to operate reliably in extreme winter environments.
The trains are capable of running through snow depths of up to 80cm and can maintain service in temperatures as low as -40°C, making them among the most heavily winterised trains currently available.
Energy efficiency has also been prioritised, with regenerative braking systems recovering energy during operation and contributing to reduced power consumption and lower operating costs.
The first trains entered service during spring 2026 following an extensive testing programme across the network. Additional deliveries are scheduled over the coming years as Västtrafik continues to replace and expand its regional fleet.
Alongside delivering new rolling stock, Alstom is responsible for maintaining Västtrafik's existing train fleet, covering both the new Avelia Stream trains and older-generation vehicles.
Once all 80 trains have been delivered, the fleet will become the backbone of regional rail operations across western Sweden.
The Avelia Stream Nordic is part of Alstom's wider Avelia high-speed train platform, which supports operational speeds ranging from 200 km/h to 320 km/h. The platform offers multiple configurations, including single-deck and double-deck variants, alongside different traction arrangements to meet individual customer requirements.
Today, more than 2,200 trains using Avelia technology are operating in 25 countries, crossing 20 international borders worldwide.
