Amey has secured an additional £800m of work on the Transpennine Route Upgrade West Alliance (TRUWest) project, part of a £2bn contract award. This next phase will involve various railway upgrades between Huddersfield and Leeds, aiming to enhance travel with more frequent, reliable, and eco-friendly services in the North.
In collaboration with key partners Arup, BAM, and Network Rail, the TRUWest Alliance will upgrade six stations, improving facilities and accessibility. They will also construct nine new bridges and one viaduct, allowing for track realignment, electrification, and expansion to support faster, more frequent electric trains. A new railway siding in Huddersfield will facilitate significant improvements at Huddersfield station. Additionally, signalling work across 28 miles of the route will boost reliability and reduce delays, while increasing the number of tracks from two to four between Huddersfield and Ravensthorpe will cut journey times and congestion. The installation of overhead line equipment (OLE) will help reduce the UK’s carbon footprint and improve air quality, while new tracks and drainage will enhance line speeds and service reliability.
Peter Sollitt, TRU West Alliance Managing Director, stated:
“This is a major achievement and testament to the hard work and commitment from all members of the West Alliance.”
We recognise the significance of the largest single contract by value that Network Rail has awarded and take that responsibility very seriously. I would like to thank all those involved in getting us to this point and look forward to celebrating our continued success as a key part of the TRU programme.”
Andy Milner, CEO at Amey, commented: “This is fantastic news for Amey and our Alliance partners, recognising the positive impact our exceptional expertise and collaboration has delivered since 2017. We have delivered key outputs, such as Manchester to Stalybridge electrification, which has recently seen the first electric passenger trains; provided innovative solutions, such as the new Ravensthorpe Viaduct; as well as environmental and sustainable commitments to help achieve Network Rail’s net zero carbon targets. We’re looking forward to the next five years, working together on the Alliance to help shape and enhance the future of rail travel across the North.”
