ScotRail’s Class 385 fleet has surpassed 62 million miles in passenger service, marking a major milestone for one of the UK rail industry's most successful modern train fleets.
The 70-strong electric fleet, built by Hitachi Rail, had accumulated a combined 62,827,366 miles by the end of July 2026, highlighting its central role in keeping communities connected across Scotland's railway network.
Since entering service in 2018, the Class 385 trains have carried an estimated 25.5 million passengers, operating key routes between Edinburgh and Glasgow, serving Glasgow's south side suburban network, and connecting communities along the East Coast to North Berwick.
The fleet was introduced to replace much of ScotRail's ageing diesel Class 170 rolling stock, delivering significant environmental benefits in the process. ScotRail estimates the electric units have reduced carbon emissions by 82 per cent compared with the diesel trains they replaced.
Maintained at Craigentinny depot in Edinburgh through a close partnership between ScotRail and Hitachi Rail, the fleet has developed a reputation for exceptional reliability and operational performance.
Speaking about the achievement, Barbara McIntyre, ScotRail Engineering Director, said:
“Clocking up more than 62 million miles is a significant milestone for the Class 385 fleet and for everyone who works hard to keep the trains running safely and reliably."
“To put that distance into perspective, it is the equivalent of travelling to the Moon and back more than 130 times.
“Since entering service in 2018, the trains have carried more than 25 million passengers and have become an important part of daily travel for communities across central Scotland.
“They have also helped us significantly reduce the environmental impact of operating these routes, with an estimated 82 per cent reduction in carbon emissions compared with the diesel trains they replaced.
“This achievement reflects the dedication of our engineering teams and the strength of our partnership with Hitachi Rail at Craigentinny.”
With passenger demand continuing to grow and network decarbonisation remaining a key industry priority, ScotRail's Class 385 fleet continues to demonstrate how modern electric rolling stock can deliver strong reliability, environmental benefits and a high-quality passenger experience.
