Balgray Station Set to Open Ahead of Schedule with Final Works Underway

A new chapter in Scotland’s rail network is just weeks away, as Balgray station in Barrhead prepares to open earlier than originally planned. The station will now welcome its first passengers on Sunday 27 September, bringing forward its debut from the previously expected November launch.

Located to serve a rapidly growing residential area, Balgray station is designed to significantly improve rail connectivity between Barrhead and Glasgow. The development is expected to support commuting, education and leisure travel, while also boosting access to nearby attractions such as Dams to Darnley Country Park.

The project forms part of the wider Glasgow City Region City Deal and is jointly funded by the UK Government, Scottish Government and East Renfrewshire Council. Delivery has been led by Network Rail in collaboration with East Renfrewshire Council, Transport Scotland, ScotRail and Story Contracting.

Final Testing and Safety Assurance Ongoing

With construction now complete, project teams have moved into the final phase, focusing on detailed finishing works, compliance checks and operational readiness testing. This includes a programme of test train movements to ensure the station meets all safety and performance standards ahead of opening.

Jeremy Spence, route delivery director at Network Rail Scotland, highlighted the importance of accessibility in driving passenger growth:

“One of the best ways to grow rail travel is to make the railway easier to access, and Balgray station will do exactly that. It will provide a new connection to the rail network for a growing community, making journeys by train a more convenient option for both residents and visitors.

“Although the physical construction work is now complete, the project is far from finished."

"Teams are carrying out a comprehensive programme of testing, safety assurance and final finishing works to make sure everything is ready for passengers when the station opens.”

Designed for Modern Travel Needs

Balgray station has been built with accessibility and sustainability in mind. Key features include:

  • Two platforms connected via a fully accessible footbridge with lifts
  • Waiting shelters and ticket machines
  • Dedicated cycle storage
  • An 80-space car park, including electric vehicle charging points
  • Direct walking routes linking to Balgray reservoir and surrounding housing developments

These features aim to encourage a shift from car to rail by making the station easy to use and well connected to local communities.

Economic and Community Benefits

Local leaders have welcomed the accelerated opening timeline, highlighting the broader economic and social value of the new station.

Owen O'Donnell, leader of East Renfrewshire Council, said:

"I’m delighted that the new Balgray Station will welcome passengers in just a matter of months. This station will bring huge benefits for the existing community in Barrhead as well as residents from the new housing developments nearby. It will provide improved access to jobs, education and services, as well as supporting our aspirations to have better connections across East Renfrewshire. It also allows for a much-improved public transport link to Dams to Darnley Country Park, which combined with the upgrades to Aurs Road will enhance the area even further. I look forward to my first journey from the station."

Meanwhile, ScotRail emphasised the role the station will play in shaping travel behaviours across the region.

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail service delivery director, added:

“The opening of Balgray station is fantastic news for the local community and everyone who travels by rail in East Renfrewshire.

"By creating a new gateway to the railway, it will give people more choice over how they travel and make it easier to leave the car at home for everyday journeys.

"We know that convenient, accessible stations encourage more people to choose rail, and Balgray has been designed with that in mind.
We look forward to welcoming customers through the doors for the first time in September and helping connect even more people with work, education, leisure, and everything this part of Scotland has to offer.”
