Blackpool’s beloved heritage trams are preparing to make a grand return to the seafront this autumn, delighting residents and visitors alike.
Operator Blackpool Transport has confirmed that work is underway to ready both the trams and the track for service, with a target to have them running in time for the October half-term.
A key milestone in the process will be an independent expert assessment of the trams’ operational readiness. This inspection will determine whether the historic vehicles are fit to return to service after their hiatus.
The heritage trams, which have become a symbol of Blackpool’s seaside charm, are expected to once again offer scenic rides along the promenade — a nostalgic experience for many and a unique attraction for new visitors. They return after an eight-month absence, having been suspended in December after becoming “increasingly challenging” to run.
Challenges for the heritage trams became visible after the tramway was transformed into a light rail system that was capable of running more modern rolling stock.
Heritage Operations Manager at Blackpool Trams, Martin Gurr, commented:
“Inspections are set to start in the next few weeks and the resulting technical reports will give us a clear idea of how many trams we can bring back into service.
“We will then carry out the additional work, including fitting them with the latest speed restriction technology and a programme of intensive driver and conductor training.
“In terms of infrastructure, we also need to inspect and clean tracks outside the Rigby Road depot before the trams can be moved to our Starr Gate depot, where they will be stored and maintained alongside the second-generation fleet.”

“Everyone at Blackpool Transport is committed to bringing back our iconic trams to the seafront, and we’ll be working tirelessly to achieve this in time for the Lightpool Festival in October.”
“As each phase of our reintroduction plan is completed, we’ll provide further updates on our work to preserve the town’s rich tramway heritage.”
Blackpool Transport has not yet confirmed the full timetable or routes, but further updates are expected in the coming weeks as preparations progress.
