Tram in Melbourne city centre

Brand new contract awarded for world’s largest tram network

A new contract has been awarded for the operation of the world’s largest tram network.

Operators Transdev and John Holland have formed a consortium to run Melbourne’s tram network for the next nine years.

Transdev and John Holland will operate under the brand Yarra Trams when the consortium’s tenure begins on 1st December later this year, having signed a contract worth AUD 6.8 billion.

With 250 kilometres of double track, 24 routes, 1600 stops and 500 trams, Melbourne’s tram network is the largest such network in the world.

Minister for Public and Active Transport on the Executive Council of Victoria, Gabrielle Williams, said: “Melbourne is home to the largest tram network in the world and this new contract will make sure our trams continue to move Victorians around safely, quickly and easily.”

“We look forward to working with Transdev John Holland as we continue to modernise and improve the passenger experience on our iconic tram network.”

The new contract focuses on performance and has set out strict benchmarks, with several monitoring points across day and night services. These measures will hold the operator to account to deliver reliable services.

Brian Brennan, Transdev Australia and New Zealand CEO, said: “Our partnership [with John Holland] will support the State’s vision of more integrated, sustainable transport for Victoria and the delivery of Melbourne’s Tram Plan.”

The agreement will also see the rollout of a fleet of more accessible Next Generation Trams, which will replace the long-serving high floor fleets.

Furthermore, in a first for public transport franchises in Victoria, there will be gender parity on the Yarra Trams board. The consortium will also set targets to increase employment opportunities for women, the long-term unemployed, young people and people living with a disability.

John Holland’s Executive General Manager for Rail and Transport, Steve Butcher, said: “We’re committed to continuous improvement of the tram network and look forward to operating the fleet of Next Generation Trams, as we deliver the state-of-the-art depot infrastructure that will house them.

“We also pride ourselves on creating a diverse, inclusive and connected workforce that reflects the people we serve every day.”

Transdev and John Holland are contracted to operate 20 light rail networks globally and also operate as a joint venture the largest bus contract in Australia, in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.

Melbourne’s tram network facilitates more than 147 million journeys every year, complementing the city’s integrated road and rail network.
