Bristol Parkway to Swindon Services Resume After Major Resilience Upgrades at Chipping Sodbury Tunnel

Passengers travelling between Bristol Parkway and Swindon are once again benefiting from direct rail services following the successful completion of a four-week programme of engineering work by Network Rail aimed at improving reliability and long-term resilience on one of the Great Western route's key railway corridors.

The extensive works focused on and around Chipping Sodbury Tunnel, where engineers delivered a series of infrastructure improvements designed to support both passenger and freight operations while reducing the impact of extreme weather on the railway.

As part of the project, teams installed more than 3,000 yards of new rail, sleepers and ballast within the tunnel, creating a stronger and more dependable track structure. Engineers also carried out essential tunnel repairs and upgraded drainage systems to improve water management and help prevent future infrastructure issues.

Beyond the eastern portal of the tunnel, significant earthworks were undertaken to improve slope stability. Around 2,000 steel soil nails were driven up to six metres into the ground, with protective soil netting installed to reinforce railway cuttings and mitigate the risk of landslips disrupting services.

The latest scheme builds on major resilience work completed in 2025, when Network Rail raised 200 metres of track by up to 20cm on the western approach to the tunnel to reduce flood risk. The project also included the replacement of two of the four pumps serving the area.

Together, the improvements form part of Network Rail's wider strategy to strengthen critical railway infrastructure across the Great Western network and enhance operational performance for years to come.

Michael Pinkerton, portfolio manager for Network Rail's Great Western route, said:

"I'd like to thank passengers for their patience as our engineers carried out a huge amount of work in and around Chipping Sodbury tunnel to make this stretch of railway more reliable and resilient.

"We've renewed track through the tunnel, repaired tunnel infrastructure, improved drainage and strengthened the slopes alongside the railway. Together, these improvements will help reduce the impact of extreme weather and make the railway more dependable for passengers and freight operators.

"This builds on the resilience work completed here last year and means the railway is in a much stronger position for the future."

The reopening marks the completion of another significant investment in the resilience of the Great Western route, ensuring a more reliable railway for passengers, freight customers and the regional economy.
