Network Rail Portfolio Delivery Director Ben Brooks has offered his perspective on how the Eastern Region is prioritising and delivering major capital projects. He has been speaking to a packed house of rail professionals and suppliers at TransCityRail Midlands 2026.
One of the key themes Ben discussed was the impact of climate change on railway design and operation. Ben highlighted the importance of adapting to new challenges, particularly in light of recent heatwaves that have prompted a re-evaluation of design standards. He pointed to the Railway Engineering Institution's efforts in addressing these issues, showcasing the industry's commitment to sustainability.
Ben’s keynote also covered various significant projects currently underway in the Eastern Region. From the newly opened Cambridge South station to the ambitious Beaulieu Park project, Ben provided insights into how these enhancements are not just about improving rail services but also about creating accessible transport options for all. The focus on accessibility is a recurring theme, with initiatives aimed at ensuring that elderly individuals, young families, and people with disabilities can easily access the network.
Ben said:
“Our focus is mainly on access for all schemes – and I will emphasise all. So Access for All is about allowing the elderly, young families, and people with disabilities to gain access to the network. It’s great that we invest in our main stations but, as we’ve already heard with some of the presentations earlier, it’s also about creating accessibility from stations across the wider network into those centres.”
Ben elaborated on the concept of scaling investments to meet the needs of different communities. He shared examples of projects that range from multi-million-pound stations to smaller, yet impactful enhancements like the new Magna tram station in Rotherham, which was delivered for under £10 million. This approach demonstrates how strategic investment can lead to significant improvements in local transport infrastructure.
