DB ESG Wins Network Rail ETCS Vehicle Survey Framework Appointment

DB ESG has secured a place on Network Rail's framework to provide independent European Train Control System (ETCS) vehicle survey reports, reinforcing its position as one of the UK's leading rolling stock engineering specialists.

Following a competitive tendering process, DB ESG has been appointed as a potential supplier of independent ETCS vehicle survey reports to support Network Rail's ETCS supply and installation procurement activities.

The appointment comes as Network Rail continues the rollout of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) across key sections of the UK rail network. The programme is a critical part of railway modernisation efforts, requiring rolling stock fleets to be surveyed before ETCS equipment can be designed and installed.

DB ESG was selected on the strength of its extensive experience delivering ETCS retrofit surveys and complex rolling stock survey programmes across both passenger and freight fleets. To date, the company has completed surveys on more than 340 locomotives destined for ETCS installation projects.

The Derby-based engineering specialist has developed expertise throughout the entire ETCS project lifecycle, covering everything from survey planning and depot coordination through to the production of detailed ETCS fitment design packages.

"We have a depth of understanding that extends far beyond survey delivery,” said Nick Goodhand, Managing Director of DB ESG. “Having designed and supported the installation of ETCS equipment across multiple vehicle classes, our survey teams understand exactly what information is required to support the design process, as well as the importance of measurement accuracy, variant documentation and interface recording.

The lessons learned through completing more than 340 surveys, combined with our continued investment in cutting-edge scanning technology, have enabled us to develop a highly efficient and robust survey methodology."

As part of its delivery strategy, DB ESG will deploy a dedicated survey team capable of undertaking all elements of the survey process within tight timescales. The methodology combines advanced 3D scanning technologies with detailed manual inspections undertaken by experienced systems engineers.

The result is a comprehensive digital "reality capture" model of each vehicle, incorporating precise 3D data alongside 360-degree imagery. This approach is expected to provide Network Rail and its delivery partners with highly accurate information to support ETCS design, integration and installation activities.

The framework appointment further strengthens DB ESG's role in supporting the digital transformation of Britain's railways and highlights the growing importance of specialist engineering expertise in delivering the UK's ERTMS ambitions.
