Pontoon Dock DLR station is set for a significant transformation to boost capacity and accessibility, ensuring it can meet the demands of a rapidly growing community. With funding now secured, the upgrade will include six new escalators, an expanded mezzanine level, and enhancements to the surrounding public space—potentially including new retail opportunities and improved landscaping.
Currently, Pontoon Dock is one of the highest stations on the DLR network, elevated about 13 metres above street level. Access is limited to stairs and lifts, with around half of peak-time passengers relying on the lifts—often leading to congestion and delays. The new escalators and larger mezzanine will ease queuing, reduce pressure on lifts, and significantly improve step-free access for all passengers.
This station upgrade is a key part of the broader Silvertown Quays regeneration project, which aims to create a vibrant new neighbourhood featuring thousands of homes—including affordable housing—and over 100,000 square metres of employment space. With redevelopment expected to bring an additional 4,500 peak-time passengers—a 415% increase—the station improvements are essential to supporting this growth. In total, the regeneration is set to unlock around 6,500 new homes and 10,000 jobs.
The project is 75% funded by third parties, including contributions from Homes England, the Greater London Authority (GLA), developer Lendlease, and Transport for London’s Sustainable Housing and Accessibility Fund. This investment supports sustainable development in one of London’s fastest-growing areas.
Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, a leading UK construction firm, has been awarded the design and build contract. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2026 and complete by the end of 2028. The station will remain open for most of the construction period, ensuring minimal disruption to passengers.
As the DLR continues to see rising demand, these improvements will help future-proof Pontoon Dock station and support the continued transformation of East London.
Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, said: "This major upgrade is great news for the Pontoon Dock area and London as a whole”.
“It means we can futureproof this station, support thousands more journeys and improve accessibility.”
“Crucially, it will also help unlock 6,500 new homes and 10,000 jobs, driving regeneration and economic growth in the Royal Docks, supporting the Mayor’s aim for a more prosperous London for all."
Alex Williams, Chief Customer and Strategy Officer at Transport for London, said: "Our vision is a London where everyone can move around the city safely, comfortably and sustainably. The transformation at Pontoon Dock will make life easier and more comfortable for customers, through reduced congestion and enhanced accessibility. It will also play a central role in supporting important regeneration in the local area, helping to unlock around 6,500 new homes and 10,000 new jobs at Silvertown Quays."
