Stadler have unveiled the new electric FLIRT train for the Valle d’Aosta Region. The state-of-the-art vehicle marks the continuation of a successful partnership between Stadler and the Italian region, in the heart of the Alps. The new vehicles will join the fleet of FLIRT Valle d'Aosta trains, which have been designated as ambassadors for the region.
With more than 2,800 units sold worldwide since their debut in 2002, Stadler’s FLIRT trains have become a proven symbol of innovation and reliability, operating in 21 countries from the Arctic Circle to North Africa. The new vehicles for Valle d’Aosta represent a significant new highlight in this success story. Laura Obert, Public Transport Director for the Valle d’Aosta-Valley said:
“These red Stadler-trains are more than just vehicles – they are ambassadors of Valle d’Aosta.”
The collaboration between Valle d’Aosta and Stadler began in 2015 with the purchase of five bimodal FLIRT vehicles, the first of their kind approved for operation in Italy, and Stadler's first bimodal vehicles. These distinctive red trains entered service in 2019 on the Aosta–Turin line and quickly became a recognisable symbol of the region.
“This project is a key milestone in the development of mobility in the Aosta Valley. Stadler and Valle d’Aosta share a common vision of sustainable, modern, and passenger-focused transport. With FLIRT, we are providing a future-proof solution that will continue to serve the region for years to come. We are proud to support our client on their journey towards sustainable and passenger-oriented transport” – said Maurizio Oberti, Regional Sales Director at Stadler for Italy.
Building on this foundation, Valle d’Aosta has ordered six additional electric FLIRT trains, financed in part by the EU Recovery Fund. These vehicles are designed to mirror the bimodal units for easy recognition, while offering greater capacity - 236 instead of 175 seats, improved sustainability thanks to a fully electric solution, and new passenger-friendly features.
Inside, travellers will find modern, comfortable interiors with 215 seats, additional folding seats, and standing room for more than 200 passengers. Passenger amenities include 230V and USB power outlets, air-conditioned cabins, and two restrooms.
“The new trains represent reliability, comfort, and accessibility, while supporting the region’s goals for sustainable mobility and tourism development,” explained Laura Obert, Public Transport Director for the Valle d’Aosta Region. “They will operate on the Turin–Aosta line, where full electrification will be completed in 2026.”
FLIRT Valle d’Aosta – a symbol of the region
All trains display the “LOVE VDA” heart logo, symbolizing the natural beauty and tourist appeal of Valle d’Aosta. “The heart represents our love for the region, its uniqueness, and its charm,” adds Laura Obert.
The new Valle d’Aosta FLIRT trains are four-car, 3kV electric multiple units (EMU) designed and built in just over two years. Based on the proven modular FLIRT platform and adapted from the original bimodal trains, they feature lightweight aluminium car bodies with a reduced axle load for improved efficiency and full network compatibility. With four wide low-floor doors on each side, the trains ensure fast passenger flow and easy, barrier-free boarding. The new trains reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h, delivering a state-of-the-art travel experience for the Valle d’Aosta region.
