East Midlands Railway (EMR) have released more details about its cutting‑edge Aurora fleet. EMR is preparing its workforce to operate the £400 million fleet through an extensive, future‑focused training programme.
The first Aurora unit entered service in December, and five trains are now running at various times throughout the week. These bi‑mode units are designed to maximise the £1.5 billion Midland Main Line upgrade, operating seamlessly on electric overhead lines and delivering a 66% reduction in carbon emissions—supporting quieter, greener and more sustainable rail travel.

Customers will experience significantly enhanced capacity and comfort, with each Aurora providing 24% more seats and over 19% additional legroom in a typical five‑car formation compared to the Meridian fleet it replaces. Once all 33 trains are fully deployed, EMR will deliver a substantial 46% increase in total seating across the Midland Main Line.
A key focus of the project has been improving passenger comfort. EMR collaborated closely with Derby-based DG DESIGN to adapt the proven FISA Lean seat, refining it to provide enhanced support while integrating essential modern features. These include power and USB charging points, generous legroom, coat hooks, spacious seat‑back tables and under‑seat space for cabin‑sized bags.

Connectivity also receives a major upgrade. The Aurora fleet features an advanced Wi‑Fi system using multiple SIMs to automatically select the strongest signal available. Specially engineered glass throughout the carriages ensures mobile reception can pass through more effectively, helping customers stay connected throughout their journey.
