GB Railfreight Removes 21 Lorry Journeys Through Rail Equipment Transfer Between Peterborough and Wigan

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has completed the rail movement of critical track treatment equipment between Peterborough and Wigan, eliminating thousands of road miles and supporting Network Rail's seasonal maintenance programmes.

The freight operator transported 11 Water Jetter Modules from Peterborough to Wigan while simultaneously returning 10 Weed Spray Modules to Peterborough. The move supports the ongoing maintenance of Network Rail's Rail Head Treatment Train (RHTT) fleet and wider seasonal vegetation and rail treatment operations.

Traditionally, this equipment is transferred using HIAB lorries. However, as part of an established annual maintenance programme, GBRf carried out the movements by rail between its Operational Headquarters in Peterborough and its maintenance facility at Wigan Springs Branch.

The operation removed 21 lorry movements from Britain's roads and eliminated more than 3,648 lorry miles, highlighting the environmental and operational benefits of rail freight.

By utilising rail to move the specialist modules, GBRf has reduced road congestion and emissions while ensuring essential equipment remains available for Network Rail's track treatment programmes.

Alex Kirk, Commercial Director at GB Railfreight, said:

"This is a great example of rail doing what it does best. Rather than moving this equipment around the country by road, we've been able to transport it by rail between Peterborough and Wigan, removing 21 lorry movements in the process.

“It's a simple idea, but one that delivers real benefits. It gets the equipment where it needs to be, supports Network Rail's seasonal treatment programmes, and takes thousands of road miles out of the journey."

The successful transfer demonstrates how freight rail can play an increasingly important role in supporting railway maintenance activities while delivering sustainability benefits. As the rail industry continues to seek ways of reducing its environmental impact, moving specialist maintenance equipment by rail offers a practical alternative to traditional road-based logistics.
