GB Railfreight Secures Key Approvals as New Class 99 Locomotives Move Closer to UK Freight Service

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has reached two major milestones in the introduction of its new Class 99 bi‑mode locomotives, marking a significant step towards their entry into commercial freight service across Britain.

The operator has confirmed that Network Rail has issued an Interim Network Rail Statement of Compatibility (NRSC) for the Class 99 fleet. This approval enables the locomotives to operate on Britain’s rail network and represents a critical phase in the certification process. GB Railfreight and Network Rail will continue working closely to achieve full authorisation.

Alongside this, the first six Class 99 locomotives have now been formally accepted into the GBRf fleet, allowing the business to accelerate driver training ahead of the locomotives entering service later this summer.

A New Generation of UK‑Designed Freight Locomotives

Manufactured by Stadler and specifically designed for the UK rail network, the Class 99 is a bi‑mode locomotive capable of operating on 25kV overhead electric power where available, switching seamlessly to a Stage V‑compliant diesel engine on non‑electrified routes.

This dual‑capability design gives freight operators the flexibility required for nationwide operations, while significantly reducing emissions and fuel consumption when compared with traditional diesel‑only locomotives.

By maximising electric running, the Class 99 offers:

  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Reduced fuel use
  • Improved haulage capability
  • Enhanced reliability
  • Greater network flexibility, eliminating the need to change traction between routes

The fleet will play a key role in supporting the decarbonisation of rail freight, while maintaining the resilience and reach required by customers across the UK.

Industry Collaboration and Progress Towards Service Entry

John Smith OBE, Chief Executive Officer of GB Railfreight, said:

“The granting of the Statement of Compatibility for our Class 99 locomotives is a significant moment for GB Railfreight and the wider sector. I would like to thank the teams at Network Rail and GB Railfreight who have worked tirelessly to reach this point. Achieving compatibility on Britain’s complex railway infrastructure is no small task, and this has been a collaborative effort throughout.

“The Class 99 represents the future of rail freight, combining improved performance with clear sustainability benefits. With this approval secured, we are now focused on bringing the locomotives into service.”

Fleet Update: Class 99 Delivery Programme

GB Railfreight has also provided an update on the delivery of its initial order of 30 locomotives:

  • Seven Class 99s are now in the UK
  • 99001–99006 have been accepted into the fleet
  • 99007 will shortly begin fault‑free running
  • 99008 and 99009 are due to arrive in the UK later this month

With approvals secured and training ramping up, the Class 99 programme is moving firmly from development into deployment — a pivotal moment for both GB Railfreight and the wider UK rail freight sector.
