The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) has announced that Mick Rayner has been appointed to the RSSB Board as an Industry Non-Executive Director. His tenure started on 30 June 2025. He represents infrastructure contractors, and their concerns are a key priority for RSSB.
Mick is currently the Managing Director of Balfour Beatty's Rail business. He was appointed to this role in 2019. He has led various companies within the group for over 20 years. Prior to this, he was Director of Safety and Quality, focusing on management system improvements. He has worked in the UK, Germany, Italy, and Scandinavia.
Mick has extensive experience leading serious accident investigations. This gives him insight into complex issues and cultural factors crucial for improving safety and business performance. He started his career as an apprentice building rolling stock and has held roles at all levels up to Managing Director.
On his appointment, Mick said:
