Hitachi’s first battery train in Europe, the Masaccio completes phase one roll out

Hitachi Rail has completed phase one of its production of the potentially game-changing “tribrid” Masaccio train.

Following the completion of phase one of production, 20 trains – branded ‘Blues’ by Italian operator Trenitalia have entered service across Italy.

The successful completion also means that the Masaccio is Europe’s first ‘tribrid’ battery train, using a combination of electric, hybrid and diesel power. The ‘tribrid’ differs from diesel-electric hybrid technology as it draws most of its power source through battery marking a first for European rail.

The new locomotive also offers the ability to recharge whilst in service, switching to the pantograph or the traction motor, boosting efficiency, sustainability and reducing carbon emissions compared to diesel engines.

This marks the first part of the €1.23 billion agreement with Trenitalia, with the full fleet planned for up to 135 trains.

The new ‘tribrid’ trains are a significant milestone for European rail travel, as it could offer a possible solution to the ongoing challenge to electrify Europe’s mainlines with only 40% currently electrified, the ‘Masaccio’ trains are seen as a possible immediate solution to those issues.

Luca D’Aquila, chief operating officer, Hitachi Rail Group and CEO of Hitachi Rail Italy, said: “The roll-out of our cutting-edge Masaccio battery train marks an important step in our efforts to decarbonise European rail.

“With around 40% of regional lines across the continent remaining un-electrified, battery hybrid technology can have an immediate impact. In Italy, the tribrid Blues train is helping cut carbon emissions by 50% compared to existing diesel services. We know that consumers increasingly prioritise the sustainability of their travel choices. Trains like the Masaccio mean that we can ensure comfortable, clean and efficient rail is an option for as many people as possible across Europe.”
