Thousands of passengers will be able to stay on rail services to and from London during a major East Coast Main Line closure this summer, thanks to a new trial being introduced by LNER and Network Rail.
On Sunday 30 August 2026, essential engineering work linked to the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP) will mean no LNER services can operate between Peterborough and London King’s Cross. The work forms part of the long-term programme to introduce digital in-cab signalling on sections of the East Coast Main Line, improving reliability, performance and capacity across the route.
In a first for the operator, LNER will divert two return services between Newcastle and Bedford, creating an alternative rail-only route into London. The services will call at Durham, Darlington, Northallerton, York and Doncaster before terminating at Bedford, where customers can connect directly with frequent Thameslink services to London St Pancras International.
The trial is expected to help around 2,500 passengers complete their journeys entirely by rail, reducing the need for rail replacement buses and offering a more seamless travel experience during the planned disruption.
The special services will operate in addition to LNER’s existing timetable for the day, with other trains continuing to run between Newcastle and Peterborough. Passengers travelling on those services will continue to use rail replacement transport between Peterborough and Bedford for onward connections.
Industry Collaboration Makes Rail-Only London Journeys Possible
The introduction of the diverted services has been made possible through extensive collaboration between rail industry partners, ensuring customers retain a practical rail travel option during the East Coast Main Line closure.

Supporting the East Coast Digital Programme
The East Coast Digital Programme is one of the most significant modernisation projects currently underway on the UK rail network. The scheme will introduce digital signalling technology that allows drivers to receive movement authorities directly in the cab, helping to improve operational performance and future-proof the railway.

Booking Information for Customers
Passengers wishing to travel on the diverted services are encouraged to book directly through the LNER website or mobile app.
For the easiest booking process, customers should search for journeys to or from London St Pancras International or London Terminals and apply the journey filter ‘Change at: Bedford’. Where timings permit, the diverted services will appear within the journey planner results.
If the trial proves successful, LNER and Network Rail hope to introduce similar diversionary services during future infrastructure projects and route closures.
