Major Engineering Works to Impact Sheffield–Chesterfield Rail Services This Weekend

Passengers travelling through Sheffield this weekend (7–8 March) are being advised to plan ahead as essential engineering work will significantly affect journey times between Sheffield and Chesterfield. Network Rail is carrying out a full reconstruction of the ageing bridge deck at Beauchief, replacing the life‑expired steel structure that carries the railway over the River Sheaf.

The project involves lifting a new 73‑tonne bridge deck into place using a heavy‑duty crane while renewing 60 metres of track, secured with 86 tonnes of ballast and 90 new sleepers. This work is crucial to maintaining the long‑term safety and reliability of this key route in South Yorkshire.

Service Changes: 7–8 March

Rail services across the region will see notable changes while the upgrade is completed, including:

  • East Midlands Railway (EMR) operating an amended and reduced service between Sheffield and London St Pancras, with extended journey times between Sheffield and Chesterfield.
  • EMR services between Sheffield and Nottingham, and between Nottingham and Norwich also being amended due to additional engineering work between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield.
  • Additional stops at Alfreton, Ilkeston and Langley Mill on EMR’s Sheffield–Nottingham route.
  • Northern running rail replacement buses between Sheffield and Chesterfield.

Sheaf Bridge

Preparatory work began in January with a site compound set up at Dore & Totley station. While this has temporarily altered parking arrangements — with alternative parking available at Abbeydale Sports Club — both station platforms remain open and accessible throughout the project.

Tom Grainger, Network Rail lead portfolio manager, said:
“Replacing this life-expired bridge is essential to maintain the safe and reliable operation of the railway between Sheffield and Chesterfield. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by the temporary parking arrangements for Dore & Totley station, and the changes to services this weekend, as we deliver this vital upgrade.”

A spokesperson on behalf of EMR and Northern added:
“We’re working closely with Network Rail to keep passengers moving while this essential upgrade takes place in Sheffield. Services will be amended over the weekend of 7-8 March, so we’re encouraging customers to check before they travel and allow extra time for their journeys.
“We’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while Network Rail carries out this project.”

The work is expected to be completed by the end of April, with the Dore & Totley station car park fully restored shortly after.
