Rail passengers travelling between Rochdale and Manchester Victoria have been thanked for their patience following the successful completion of a critical phase of engineering works aimed at boosting long-term network reliability.
Over the past week, teams from Network Rail, working alongside principal contractor Kier Infrastructure, have carried out extensive track renewals and signalling upgrades on the route. The work forms a key part of preparations for the construction of a new turnback facility at Brewery Junction, located just east of Manchester Victoria station.
The new turnback, scheduled for completion next year, is a significant investment in operational resilience. Once delivered, it will create additional capacity within the station, allowing services to be managed more flexibly—particularly during disruption—while improving the overall reliability of train services across the corridor.

During the engineering blockade, rail services between Rochdale and Manchester were suspended, with replacement bus services in operation to maintain connectivity for passengers.
Speaking after the work was completed, Lorna Samways, senior sponsor for Network Rail, acknowledged the disruption but emphasised the long-term benefits of the scheme:
“We would like to thank passengers for their patience during this week. There is never an ideal time to close the railway, but this work is a really important step in the construction of the new turnback at Brewery Junction.
“Once it is complete, it will give our teams more options at Manchester Victoria and improve reliability for passengers in the long term.”
The works delivered during this blockade included not only track renewals but also re-signalling and overhead line improvements—critical upgrades that underpin the future performance of the route.
Boguslaw Kozlowski, project manager for rail at Kier Infrastructure, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project:
“Over the last week, our team successfully delivered key track, re-signalling and overhead line improvements that mark an important milestone in the delivery of this new turnback facility.
“Extensive planning went into this work alongside Network Rail and our supply chain partners, and we’re pleased it has been delivered safely and on schedule.”
A Strategic Boost for Northern Capacity
The Brewery Junction turnback project is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing operational efficiency at Manchester Victoria—one of the North’s busiest rail hubs. By freeing up platform space and enabling more dynamic service recovery during disruption, the scheme supports wider ambitions to improve rail performance across Greater Manchester and beyond.
For industry professionals, the successful delivery of this phase demonstrates the ongoing importance of coordinated engineering access, robust planning, and strong collaboration across client, contractor, and supply chain partners.
