Alstom and DSB, the national Danish railway operator, have been awarded for the design of DSB’s new fleet.
The IC5 Coradia Stream fleet, supplied by Alstom, picked up the prestigious “Red Dot Award” 2024 for “design excellence”.
The fleet is the result of a close collaboration between Alstom and DSB, with the two companies working together to create a train reflecting the values and needs of the Danish people.
The IC5 trains will replace the IC3, IC4, IR4 and Øresund trains currently in operation, and operate as high-speed, intercity and regional trains.
Jörg Nikutta, Managing Director of Alstom Denmark, said: "We are very proud that the IC5 trains have received the Red Dot Award 2024 for 'product design'. Our goal was to design the train of the future, expressing both integrity and authenticity.
“This award is the result of our collaboration with DSB, where we have managed to create a timeless design that is inviting for passengers, and it is gratifying to be confirmed that we have succeeded in doing just that."
In 2021, Alstom and DSB signed a framework agreement worth €2.6 billion for the supply of 100 Coradia Stream trains and 15 years of full-service maintenance.
The companies followed two key principles in Danish design, simplicity and functionalism, which are both on display in the final product. The interior of the IC5 trains incorporates natural materials such as wood and raw metal, also reflecting Alstom’s latest design principles. This use of raw materials makes the fleet 96% recyclable.
The interior lighting is also designed to assist passengers in navigation, while enhancing the on-board experience with different brightness levels and colour combinations.
With individual facilities, spacious and accessible seating, and an advanced passenger information system, the new fleet offers a modern and comfortable travelling experience. The train’s mechanical qualities also improve comfort, with controlled shock absorption.
Jürgen Müller, Director of Strategy and Train Equipment, said: “From the beginning, we have focused on creating a unique and pleasant customer experience with a timeless expression. The award is a testament to DSB's focus and tradition of combining functionality with aesthetics.”
The IC5 trains are based on Alstom’s state-of-the-art, low-floor, high-performance Coradia Stream EMU. The train, which is capable of up to 200 km/h, offers a modular design and allows operators to choose the configuration best suited to their market and commercial strategy.
Sustainable versions of the train are also available, with some specifications producing no direct carbon emissions, powered instead by battery or hydrogen on non-electrified lines.
More than 1000 trains based on the Coradia Stream family have already been ordered across Europe.
