Major improvements to the South Yorkshire Supertram system are set to continue through the final two weeks of the summer school holidays, marking the culmination of a substantial investment in the network this season.
Why It Matters
The upcoming works will focus on replacing worn rails—an essential upgrade that will strengthen and future-proof the system. These enhancements are designed to keep the network dependable for the millions of passengers who rely on it each year.
A Long-Term Commitment
This phase is part of a broader pledge by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) to invest over £110 million by 2027. The plan includes:
- Modernising trams and tracks
- Upgrading control systems and power infrastructure
- Building a brand-new Tram Train station at Magna
These upgrades are a vital step toward a more resilient and efficient Supertram network—keeping South Yorkshire moving now and into the future.
Melanie Corcoran, SYMCA’s Executive Director of Transport, said:
“These works are part of SYMCA’s ongoing investment in Supertram.”
“By scheduling works over the summer and school holidays when the tram network has lower passenger numbers, we hope to minimise any passenger and traffic disruption and keep people moving while this work progresses.
“The rail replacement on Middlewood Road will be the final works to be completed this summer. By investing in the Supertram system, we’re increasing the longevity of the region’s tram network and ensuring the safe operation of this popular service for the millions of people who use it every year.”
