NS and Stadler Sign Agreement for 36 New FLIRT Trains to Boost Dutch Rail Capacity

Dutch railway operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) has signed a framework agreement with Stadler for the delivery of 36 FLIRT trains, a move aimed at increasing capacity and enhancing passenger comfort across the Dutch network. The new trains are scheduled to enter service in 2030.

The order comprises 18 four-car units and 18 six-car units, reflecting NS’s commitment to meeting the needs of a growing ridership in the coming years. This latest agreement further strengthens the long-standing partnership between NS and Stadler.

Celebration

NS CEO Wouter Koolmees highlighted the importance of reliability and adaptability in the new fleet:

“We are delighted to continue our collaboration with Stadler and to introduce these new sprinter trains in the Netherlands. It is important to us that these trains are reliable and modern. They are suitable for various routes and services. This means we are well equipped for the future and can continue to meet the changing needs of our passengers.”

Stadler’s FLIRT trains are known for their modular design, offering flexibility across different service profiles. Ansgar Brockmeyer, Head of Marketing & Sales and Deputy Group CEO at Stadler, explained:

“Nederlandse Spoorwegen was looking for a modern vehicle for local transport that could also be used as an intercity train. The FLIRT train impressed NS with its modular and versatile concept. Passengers can look forward to a comfortable, bright and well-designed train. I would like to thank NS for their trust and look forward to continuing our collaboration.”

Train Interior

The new trains will feature accessible interiors, generous space for luggage, pushchairs and bicycles, and designated areas for passengers with reduced mobility. Real-time passenger information displays, clear signage, and an adaptive lighting system—which adjusts brightness and colour temperature based on time of day and season—will create a calm and pleasant travel environment.

The FLIRT platform is a proven success, with over 3,000 units sold in 24 countries worldwide, including 134 already in reliable service in the Netherlands. This new order represents the next step in the evolution of the FLIRT family, tailored to NS’s operational needs.

The trains will be engineered in Prague and manufactured at Stadler’s Siedlce plant in Poland, with delivery and commissioning planned for 2030.
