A significant milestone for rail connectivity in the South West was celebrated over the weekend with the official opening of Okehampton Interchange station, the latest addition to the increasingly successful Dartmoor Line.
Senior representatives from Joanna Grew, Route Strategy Director for Network Rail and GWR, Cllr Jacqi Hodgson, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Biodiversity at Devon County Council, Julian Brazil, Leader of Devon County Council, and Cllr Mandy Ewings, Leader of West Devon Borough Council, joined industry and local authority partners to mark the occasion.
Located alongside the Dartmoor Line, Okehampton Interchange has been designed to improve access to rail services for communities across West Devon, Torridge and North Cornwall, providing convenient connections to Exeter and the wider national rail network.
The opening represents another major step in the revitalisation of the Dartmoor Line, which returned to regular passenger operation in 2021 after more than five decades without daily services. The route has significantly outperformed expectations since reopening, recording more than half a million passenger journeys in its first two years.
Built to encourage integrated and sustainable travel, Okehampton Interchange includes a 200-space park-and-ride facility, sheltered cycle storage, a covered bus interchange and future electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Accessibility has been prioritised throughout the station, with step-free access provided via lifts, ramps and a footbridge.
The £18 million project has been funded through a combination of local and national investment, including £13.5 million from the UK Government following a successful funding bid led by West Devon Borough Council and supported by Devon County Council. Both authorities also contributed match funding.
Delivery of the project has relied on strong collaboration across the rail and local government sectors. Network Rail managed construction of the station through contractor Octavius, while Devon County Council oversaw improvements to walking, cycling and bus facilities on Hameldown Road. These works were delivered by Kennford Tarmacadam, with environmental support provided by WSP.
Beyond improving transport links, Okehampton Interchange is expected to play an important role in driving regional economic growth. Research suggests railway stations across the South West could support up to 238,000 jobs and contribute £14.25 billion to the regional economy by 2035.
Together with Marsh Barton station, which opened in 2023, Okehampton Interchange is forecast to help create around 1,500 permanent jobs and generate approximately £112 million annually for the local economy over the next decade.
