Production on tunnel segments under way in Hartlepool as HS2 begins search for door suppliers

Production of tunnel segments for the HS2 project has begun at a new facility in Hartlepool, UK. The facility, which is owned and operated by STRABAG, will produce 36,000 segments for the twin bored tunnels under London.

The segments are being made using a state-of-the-art automated process that ensures they are of the highest quality. Each segment is 8.8 meters in diameter and 0.35 meters thick, and weighs 6 tonnes. They are made from concrete that is specially formulated to withstand the high pressures and temperatures that will be experienced in the tunnels.

The segments are being produced at a rate of 100 per week, and the first deliveries are expected to be made in early 2024. They will be transported to the HS2 construction sites by rail, which will help to reduce the environmental impact of the project.

The new facility in Hartlepool is creating over 100 jobs, and is a major boost to the local economy. It is also a significant milestone for the HS2 project, which is now well underway.

In addition to the tunnel segments, the facility in Hartlepool will also produce other components for the HS2 project, such as tunnel linings and drainage systems. The facility is expected to be operational for the next 10 years, and will play a key role in the construction of the HS2 network.

Ruth Todd CBE, HS2’s chief commercial officer, said: “HS2 is already bringing benefits to the UK economy, creating jobs around the country as part of the construction and manufacturing required for HS2. STRABAG’s choice of location in Hartlepool for its new facility demonstrates a commitment to bringing new job and training opportunities to the North East, and the HS2 project provides a great pipeline of work.

“Over 3,000 UK based businesses are already working on the project, with over 28,500 jobs directly supported, with many more through the supply chain. As more phases of the HS2 programme begin, there will be many more opportunities for businesses across the UK to get involved in this once-in-a-generation mega-project.”

As production got underway in Hartlepool, HS2 announced it had begun the search for a specialist contractor to deliver platform edge doors for the new Old Oak Common and Interchange stations.

The platform edge doors are designed to improve safety for passengers on the platform whilst boarding. Platform edge doors will be provided at Old Oak Common station, in west London, and Interchange station, near Birmingham Airport. The framework agreement will also have the option to supply the same system for the proposed Manchester Airport station in Phase 2b leg from Birmingham to Manchester.

Andrew Cubitt, HS2 Ltd’s procurement director said: “Once complete, HS2 will transform journeys across the UK, help to boost the economy and support the UK’s transition to net zero. Platform edge doors will help improve safety and enhance the customer experience at Old Oak Common and Interchange stations.

“I look forward to seeing who comes forward and working with the team to ensure we are able to deliver the best quality and value for the project.”

The framework agreement could be worth up to £93 million with the first call-off contract expected to be awarded in early 2025.
