Network Rail will complete more than £5 million of major engineering work in Leicester to upgrade passenger journeys.
Work is scheduled to take place this Saturday and Sunday south of Leicester station and will improve reliability of passenger services for years to come.
This weekend’s work will see engineers replace a key set of switches and crossings at Knighton Junction. Due to the junction’s curved layout, engineers regularly attend the site to renew equipment, and have also previously carried out strengthening measures to protect other components, prolonging their life and creating smoother and more reliable journeys.
This means that upgrades scheduled for this weekend are the final work to be completed for the £5.3 million project.
Tara Scott, Infrastructure Director for Network Rail’s East Midlands route, said: “We constantly strive to improve our rail network and make journeys better for our passengers.
The junction is a key interchange for trains, carrying passengers north to south on the Midlands Main Line and east to west between Anglia and Birmingham, and is extensively used by freight services.
Additional engineering work is also scheduled as Network Rail teams work on the new overhead lines between Kettering and Wigston, which were powered up last week in the latest stage of the Midland Main Line upgrade.
