The Railway Industry Association (RIA) has strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of Simon Scott as its new Technical & Innovation Director, marking a significant step as the UK rail sector prepares for the introduction of Great British Railways (GBR).
Scott joins RIA at a critical time for the industry, bringing more than three decades of experience spanning both public sector organisations and the commercial supply chain. His appointment underscores the growing importance of innovation, digital transformation and systems thinking in shaping a more efficient and sustainable railway.
With responsibility for leading RIA’s technical and innovation agenda, Scott will work closely with the association’s wider membership base, government stakeholders and client organisations to help align industry priorities during the transition to GBR.
A strategic appointment for a changing railway
Scott’s career has been defined by his leadership in developing technology strategies and promoting integrated approaches across the rail sector. His cross-sector experience is expected to provide valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities facing the supply chain—particularly as the industry navigates structural reform.
Darren Caplan, Chief Executive of the Railway Industry Association (RIA), commented:
“Simon Scott is a well-known and respected operator in the UK railway industry and joins RIA at a hugely important moment for the railway, as the industry prepares for the transition to GBR and seeks to deliver a more efficient, customer-focused and sustainable network. He brings a combination of deep technical expertise and extensive experience across both client and supplier communities. His knowledge of innovation, systems integration, digital technologies and industry transformation will be invaluable as we work with our members and partners to help shape the future railway. We are delighted to welcome Simon to the team!”
Driving innovation and technical excellence
As RIA continues to represent over 480 member organisations across the rail supply chain, Scott’s appointment reflects a clear intent to accelerate innovation adoption—particularly in areas such as data, artificial intelligence, and systems integration.
His role will be pivotal in supporting suppliers as they adapt to new operating models and evolving technical standards under GBR, ensuring the supply chain remains competitive, collaborative and aligned with national rail objectives.
Simon Scott, RIA Technical & Innovation Director, said:
“I am incredibly excited to be joining RIA at such a transformative moment for the UK railway. Having worked across the industry for many years, I know first-hand how vital the supply chain is to the railway’s success, sustainability and efficiency. I have also seen the value that RIA brings through its advocacy and its role in championing a stronger, more dynamic supply sector, having been a member of the Association myself for many years. I am now looking forward to working closely with our 480-plus members, as well as government partners and client organisations to help strengthen the industry’s technical maturity, accelerate the adoption of innovation, including data and AI, and ensure that suppliers have a powerful, unified technical voice in shaping GBR as it develops in the months and years ahead.”
Supporting the future of GBR
The timing of Scott’s arrival is particularly significant. With GBR expected to reshape how the railway is managed and delivered, RIA is positioning itself—and its members—at the forefront of this transformation.
Scott’s expertise will help reinforce collaboration between stakeholders, encourage the uptake of cutting-edge technologies, and ensure that innovation remains central to the UK rail industry’s long-term strategy.
