South Western Railway (SWR) has the most stations of any operator in the Government’s latest Access for All (AfA) funding announcement.
The most recent announcement listed 50 stations selected for initial feasibility work, eight of which were SWR stations.
The studies will consider how accessibility can be improved at the stations, including the installation of new lifts and construction of new bridges where necessary.
Michael Adlington, South Western Railway’s Senior Accessibility and Inclusion Manager said: “We work incredibly hard in collaboration with local stakeholders to submit these nominations, and so we are really pleased that SWR has secured the most successful bids of any train operator, unlocking huge investments in the communities we serve.
“Should the feasibility studies achieve positive outcomes, customers who use these stations will benefit from transformative accessibility upgrades in the years to come.”
If the feasibility work is successful, the stations will become part of the expanding AfA programme, which could mean between £50-60 million in funding for SWR to enable the schemes to proceed to construction.
The eight stations included in the list are Ash Vale, Dorchester South, Esher, Hedge End, Kew Bridge, Raynes Park, Swanwick and Yeovil Junction.
TransCity Rail South is taking place in Twickenham on Thursday, 11th July 2024. Rail operators and suppliers will be in attendance for a day of presentations and networking. For your tickets, click here.
