ORR reports increase in railway journeys

Over 360 million passenger journeys have taken place on the railways this quarter – 14 million more than for the same period last year, according to new data from the ORR.

The ORR has published the latest rail usage statistics, covering April 1-June 30 2012. The total number of kilometres travelled by rail passengers during this period was 14.4 billion, which is 0.4 billion more than the same quarter in 2011-12.

Journeys on London and South East services rose by 5.4% and long distance services increased by 4.1% to 31.5 million.

Passenger kilometres on London and South East franchised operators increased by 4.5% to 6.7 billion passenger kilometres, and on long distance services by 2.9% to 4.9 billion passenger kilometres compared with the equivalent quarter last year.

However, passenger km travelled on franchised regional operators decreased by 0.3% to 2.7 billion, compared to quarter one last year.
