#UKRIA2018 picks up HS2 chief executive for keynote speech

Mark Thurston, chief executive of HS2, has been announced as the keynote speaker for this year’s prestigious UK Rail Industry Awards (UKRIA).

Thurston, who took over at the country’s biggest rail project in March, is expected to offer a unique insight into the industry for more than 1,000 rail-sector professionals already registered to attend the event.

He will offer an exciting view on the sector from a rail veteran who has seen it all over a 25-year career in project and programme management.

Thurston left his position as managing director for Europe at private-sector giant CH2M to join HS2 as it moves this year from the design phase to implementation.

Last year’s event was fronted by Network Rail chairman, Sir Peter Hendy, who gave an enlightening key note speech to the awards – which celebrate the most innovative and ground-breaking projects and companies in the rail industry.

The shortlist for the event came out last month, drawing interest from public and private sectors alike, with a range of companies, joint ventures and individuals up for 28 categories.

Now with the announcement of this year’s judging panel – fronted by a variety of massive names – excitement is continuing to grow.

#UKRIA2018 will be taking place at London’s Battersea Evolution on 22 March. To attend or sponsor, please visit our website. But be aware: sponsorship opportunities are selling out fast, so be quick!

23/01/2018Out with the old...

Despite a few disappointing policy announcements, especially for the electrification aficionados amongst us, 2017 was, like Darren Caplan writes on page 20, a year generally marked by positive news for the rail industry. We polished off the iconic Ordsall Chord (p32), hit some solid milestones on Thameslink (p40), progressed on ambitious rolling stock orders (p16), and finally started moving forward on HS2 (p14) ‒ paving the way for a New Ye... read more >
