Alstom has been awarded a contract worth €4 billion to supply 90 Adessia Stream commuter trains for use on a local network in Germany.
The contract, which also includes maintenance of the trains for a period of 34 years, is Alstom’s largest order in Germany to date and is one of the largest ever awarded in Germany for urban mobility solutions.
Alstom will supply the trains to local passenger transport authorities go.Rheinland and Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) for use on Cologne’s S-Bahn network.
Two versions of the Adessia Stream train will be delivered, and will operate on different parts of the network. The shorter version has nine cars and a length of nearly 150 metres, with a capacity of more than 1150 passengers. The longer version with 11 cars comes in at almost 170 metres and a capacity of 1340 passengers.
Both versions have a top speed of 140 km/h.
Müslüm Yakisan, President of the DACH region at Alstom, said:
“Alstom will deliver comfortable and innovative trains with a high level of passenger experience and a strong focus on accessibility.”
The train concept focuses on innovation, accessibility maintainability and lifecycle optimisation. An addition to Wi-Fi and power sockets, specially treated windows will ensure improved reception for mobile phones.
In a first for a German S-Bahn fleet, the trains will be equipped with toilets. The trains are also fitted with air conditioning that will provide a comfortable ride in any weather conditions ranging from -25 to 45°c.
The trains are equipped for both short- and long-distance passengers, with a combination of standing room and seats and multi-purpose spaces in each car for prams, bicycles and wheelchairs.
Michael Vogel, Managing Director of go.Rheinland, added: “We have commissioned a completely newly developed vehicle that is tailored to the special needs and requirements in our region.
“We are thus raising the S-Bahn fleet to a new level and are already looking forward to using the trains.”
