Alstom has signed a £370 million contract to bring a new batch of passenger trains to the Elizabeth Line.
The contract means that Alstom will build ten new nine-car Aventra trains and carry out associated maintenance for Transport for London (TfL) until 2046.
The trains will be funded by £220.5 million from the Department for Transport.
The Elizabeth Line, which opened in 2022, already has a fleet of 70 Alstom-built Aventra Class 345 trains, although doubts that this would be sufficient to meet rising demand throughout the rest of the 2020s and 2030s led to the new contract.
Nick Crossfield, Managing Director UK and Ireland at Alstom, said: “We are delighted to now have a confirmed workload for Derby Litchurch Lane and our supply chain across the UK.
“The UK remains one of Alstom’s most important global markets.”
Like the rest of the fleet, the ten new electric multiple unit (EMU) trains will be built at Alstom’s Derby Litchurch Lane Works, Alstom’s largest manufacturing facility in the world.
It is also the only UK facility that designs, engineers, builds and tests trains for domestic and export markets.
