Alstom has successfully delivered the first phase of its advanced Iconis Traffic Management System—now known as Onvia Vision—for New Zealand’s national rail network.
The TMS will be operated from two central control hubs in Wellington and Auckland and is set to eventually manage the entire country’s rail operations. This rollout marks the beginning of a phased national deployment, supported by Alstom’s long-term training, maintenance, and technical support.
The Onvia Vision system provides KiwiRail with real-time operational data, enabling:
- Enhanced signalling and network security
- Predictive issue detection and resolution
- Improved passenger communication
- Greater automation and operational efficiency
Pascal Dupond, Managing Director of Alstom and Australia and New Zealand, commented:
“Our technology represents a new digital age for the New Zealand rail network with KiwiRail joining more than 30 countries across the world who are operating our gold standard proven technology. Our local partnership with KiwiRail has been an excellent collaboration. It is a textbook example of close partnership between Alstom as a technology provider working hand-in-glove with KiwiRail with a shared focus to deliver the best possible system for New Zealand rail passengers.”

The system is designed to increase network resilience and capacity, reduce delays by up to 30%, and deliver energy savings of up to 20% through optimised scheduling.
The Wairarapa Line deployment is the first of several phases. As the system expands, it will replace manual operations with a fully integrated digital platform, improving performance and reliability across New Zealand’s rail network.
Alstom’s Onvia Vision powers over 70 mainline control centres in more than 20 countries, drawing on over 30 years of expertise in rail operations and signalling.
This milestone marks a significant leap forward in New Zealand’s rail modernisation journey, aligning with global best practices in digital rail management.
