Alstom has reached a significant milestone in Ireland’s rail modernisation programme with the successful installation and certification of the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1 on the Head of Series for the Iarnród Éireann (IÉ) 22000 Class fleet.
Train 22001 has now received Assessment Body, Notified Body and Designated Body certification from independent safety assessor RINA, confirming the safety and compliance of the system developed by Alstom and its partners.
The ETCS Level 1 system is a key component of Ireland’s digital rail transformation. It replaces legacy systems like Automatic Train Protection and Continuous Automatic Warning System with Alstom’s European Vital Computer – the central safety brain of the new system.
Earlier this year, Alstom also completed the installation of 120km of trackside infrastructure, enhancing safety and interoperability across the Dublin Area Rapid Transit network and beyond – from Dundalk to Greystones.
Julie Williams, Project Manager at Alstom, said:
“Successfully completing the ETCS installation and assessment body certification on the Head of Series for the 22000 Class is a proud moment for the entire team. This milestone not only validates the seamless integration of Alstom’s onboard systems with Ireland’s trackside infrastructure, but also demonstrates our commitment to delivering cutting-edge, safety-driven solutions that support the future of Irish rail.
“It sets a strong foundation for the rollout of the new DART+ fleet and reinforces our dedication to innovation and excellence in rail modernisation.”

The ETCS rollout supports the delivery of Ireland’s new Alstom-built DART+ fleet, which will come equipped with ETCS as standard. Under a 10-year framework agreement, Alstom is supplying up to 750 new commuter rail cars, including 37 five-car X’trapolis trains, with 31 battery electric multiple units (BEMUs) and 6 electric multiple units.
The first train from the new fleet arrived in Dublin in 2024 and is currently undergoing testing ahead of entering service in 2025.
Funded under the National Development Plan by the National Transport Authority, the DART+ programme will double capacity and triple electrification across the Greater Dublin Area – supporting sustainable mobility, reducing emissions, and improving quality of life for communities across the region.
