Alstom has strengthened its long-standing presence in Central America after signing a US$90 million (€80 million) contract with Metro de Panamá S.A. (MPSA) to provide long-term maintenance services for the metro trains operating on Lines 1 and 2 of Panama City’s network.
The agreement covers the maintenance and overhaul of 235 Metropolis metro cars, helping to ensure the continued safe, reliable and efficient operation of one of Latin America’s busiest urban transport systems.
The contract marks another milestone in the partnership between Alstom and Metro de Panamá, which has been instrumental in supporting the development of the country's modern public transport infrastructure over the past decade.
The signing ceremony was attended by Nicolas Forissier, French Minister with Special Responsibility for Foreign Trade and Investment Promotion, highlighting the importance of the deal for both Panama’s transport sector and the wider economic relationship between France and Panama.
Under the agreement, Alstom will deliver major maintenance services and long-term overhaul activities across the Metropolis fleet serving Lines 1 and 2. The programme includes scheduled interventions at five-, six-, eight-, ten- and twelve-year intervals.
Work will focus on key systems and components including bogies, traction equipment, braking systems, pneumatic systems, wheels, auxiliary equipment and other safety-critical assets. The maintenance regime is designed to maximise fleet reliability, availability and operational performance while extending the service life of the trains.

The latest contract further strengthens the strategic partnership between the two organisations and underlines Alstom’s commitment to supporting the continued modernisation of Panama’s urban transport network.
Metro de Panamá currently carries around 400,000 passengers every day, making it a critical part of the country's economic and social infrastructure. Ensuring high levels of fleet availability and reliability remains essential as demand for urban mobility continues to grow across the capital.
The agreement also reflects continued cooperation between France and Panama in infrastructure development, innovation and sustainable transportation, with both countries committed to advancing resilient and efficient mobility solutions.
