Amey has won a significant new contract with Network Rail to deliver multi-disciplinary railway consultancy services for the strategic Leeds–Sheffield corridor—one of the central components of the Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) programme.
Awarded through Network Rail’s Development and Design Partnership Framework (DDPF), the contract positions Amey at the forefront of efforts to enhance connectivity between Sheffield and Leeds. The programme aims to increase rail capacity, introduce additional train services, and deliver faster journey times across vital northern routes.
Under the agreement, Amey will collaborate closely with Network Rail to design and develop engineering solutions for the Leeds–Sheffield route. Drawing on its experience in designing, operating and maintaining complex rail systems, Amey will produce provisional designs focused on improving network performance, reducing disruption, and enhancing resilience for both passenger and freight operations.
Colin Wood, Managing Director at Amey, said:
“We are pleased to have secured this contract as part of the Network Rail Development and Design Partnership Framework."
"This new contract award reflects our strong track record in delivering complex rail solutions and our commitment to supporting improved connectivity across the North of England as part of the Northern Powerhouse Rail programme."
"We look forward to working closely with Network Rail to deliver solutions that improve performance and resilience across the wider rail network.”
A key element of Amey’s delivery model is its systems‑thinking approach, enabling end‑to‑end engineering solutions grounded in transparency, value generation, and strong collaboration with delivery partners. This approach will be strengthened by Amey’s digital and data‑led tools—particularly around optioneering and performance insights.
These data-driven methods will support assessments of station dwell times and their broader impact on operational performance, with a focus on improving flow and reliability at major pinch points such as Sheffield station.
This latest success further cements Amey’s growing relationship with Network Rail and reinforces the company’s role as a trusted partner in delivering critical infrastructure that connects northern communities, businesses, and regional economies.
