Berrylands station will close to passengers from Monday 11 May until the end of September as part of a £6 million investment to modernise the station and significantly improve safety and passenger facilities.
During the closure, South Western Railway (SWR) services will not call at Berrylands while engineers undertake a major programme of works, including the complete replacement of both platforms and a range of safety enhancements.
The station is located on top of a five‑metre embankment, with platforms that are partially constructed from timber. As part of the upgrade, these will be replaced with new glass‑reinforced plastic platforms, a modern solution designed to extend the life of the station for decades and reduce future maintenance requirements.
Alongside the new platforms, passengers can expect a step‑change in station facilities. The programme includes improved lighting, enhanced CCTV coverage, new Customer Information Screens and upgraded station help points, all aimed at delivering a safer and more welcoming environment.
Once reopened, Berrylands will offer modernised infrastructure and significantly improved passenger amenities, aligning with wider industry objectives around safety, resilience and customer experience.
Speaking on behalf of Network Rail and South Western Railway, George Murrell, Wessex Route Renewals Director, said:

“We know closing the station for several months will be inconvenient, but this £6 million investment will provide our passengers with a much better experience when travelling with us. We’re grateful to the local community for their patience while we carry out these important upgrades.”
Ahead of the main construction phase, preparatory works are already underway, including vegetation clearance, utility diversions and ecological mitigation to protect native wildlife.
The core construction activity will involve site set‑up, demolition of the existing platforms, piling works and the installation of modular platform units. Final snagging and site demobilisation will take place after the station has reopened to passengers.
