East Midlands Railway (EMR) has made significant strides in improving air quality at Sheffield station, following recent ventilation upgrades as part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability through the Getting There Greener strategy and Clean Air Improvement Plan.
In collaboration with Colt Construction Ltd, EMR installed subtle roof vents above the station’s taxi rank. These vents boost natural airflow, helping to disperse vehicle emissions and reduce nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) levels in the enclosed area.
This initiative supports Sheffield City Council’s Clean Air Zone and aligns with EMR’s no-idling policy for taxis—targeting a location previously known for poor air quality.
Air quality measurements taken before and after the installation revealed a 35% drop in NO₂ emissions, marking a clear improvement in the station’s environment.
EMR plans to continue monitoring air quality at Sheffield station and will introduce further enhancements as part of its broader clean air efforts.
Philippa Cresswell, Customer Experience Director at East Midlands Railway, said: "We all want cleaner, healthier spaces – especially in places like stations, where lots of people come and go every day. These early results at Sheffield are really encouraging and its clear they are already having a positive impact.
“However, this is just one step in our wider strategy – Getting There Greener – which is focused on taking real, measurable steps to create healthier, more sustainable environments for passengers, staff, and the communities we serve."
"There’s more to come, and we’re excited to keep making progress on this important issue."
