Colas Rail UK has strengthened its position at the heart of the West Midlands’ transport transformation, announcing the award of several major infrastructure packages through its long-standing role as Principal Contractor within the Midland Metro Alliance (MMA).
The new contracts guarantee a steady pipeline of complex, high‑value light rail works across the West Midlands Metro network until 2028. They also reinforce the MMA’s established reputation for delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget—an achievement that continues to earn the trust of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).
Driving Growth Across the Metro Network
The latest awards include two significant extensions that are central to the region’s long‑term mobility strategy:
Birmingham Eastside Extension – Phase 2
Phase 2 builds directly on the recently completed Phase 1, which established an interim terminus at Millennium Point. The next stage will support critical transport and regeneration objectives by:
- Integrating seamlessly with the new HS2 Curzon Street Station
- Supporting the emergence of Birmingham’s new Sports Quarter
- Enabling future metro links to Birmingham Airport and unlocking further regeneration in Digbeth
Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metro Extension – Phase 2
With Phase 1 already recognised as the largest light rail scheme currently under construction in the UK, the next phase will extend the route from Dudley to the Merry Hill shopping centre. The works include major engineering interventions such as:
- Construction of a new viaduct
- Detailed remediation of historic infrastructure
- Continuation of preservation efforts following the award‑winning restoration of the Brunelian Parkhead Viaduct
The scheme is positioned as a major catalyst for regeneration across the Black Country, supporting new investment, housing, and improved accessibility for previously underserved communities.
Enhancing Capacity at Wednesbury Depot
Alongside the extension works, Colas Rail will expand stabling capacity at the existing Wednesbury depot to accommodate the growing tram fleet. Enhancements include internal modifications to the Operational Maintenance Control building and the creation of a new Control Room to meet the operational needs of the expanding network.
Commitment to Local Communities
Colas Rail and its Alliance partners remain committed not only to delivering physical infrastructure but also to embedding long‑term social value. Apprenticeships, school engagement programmes, and targeted community initiatives continue to support WMCA’s wider objectives for inclusive growth. The aim is to ensure that each project leaves a positive legacy far beyond the track alignment itself.
Speaking on the contract award, Colas Rail Urban Managing Director, Iain Anderson, said:
“These awards ensure continuity of work through to 2028 – a significant endorsement of our dedicated, highly skilled, and passionate team. We look forward to continuing this journey, driving forward the successful delivery of projects that will continue to positively shape the lives and the futures of the people of the West Midlands.”
