Edinburgh Trams Hits One Million Tap On, Tap Off Journeys – A Milestone in Smart Ticketing Integration

Edinburgh’s award-winning tram network has reached a significant milestone in its digital transformation journey, with over one million journeys now made using its Tap On, Tap Off (TOTO) contactless payment system. Launched on 19 May 2025, the system has quickly become a cornerstone of the city’s integrated transport offering.

The TOTO system enables passengers to tap their contactless card or device before boarding and again upon exiting the tram, streamlining fare collection and improving the passenger experience. Its success reflects a growing appetite for smart, frictionless travel solutions across the UK’s urban transport networks.

“TOTO allows a seamless tram and bus travel across the city for residents, commuters, and visitors alike and reaching one million Tap On, Tap Off journeys in under six months is a fantastic achievement.”

said Marilena Papadopoulou, Head of Projects & Renewals at Edinburgh Trams, who led the rollout.

“The success of the system is a clear sign that our customers are embracing a smarter, more flexible travel in the Scottish capital.”

The milestone coincides with the launch of Apple Pay Express Mode, further enhancing convenience for users by allowing faster transactions without Face ID or passcode authentication. This development is expected to drive even greater adoption of contactless travel.

For transport professionals, the TOTO system offers a compelling case study in customer-centric innovation. By integrating daily and weekly fare capping across Edinburgh Trams and Lothian Buses, it not only simplifies travel but also supports modal shift and sustainable urban mobility goals.

“This milestone reflects the continued growth of tram usage across Edinburgh,” Marilena added. “We are committed to continue delivering sustainable ticketing options, and Tap On, Tap Off is helping us to achieve this, whilst also future proofing the tramway and how people travel across Edinburgh.”

As UK rail and light rail operators explore ways to modernise fare collection and improve passenger experience, Edinburgh’s TOTO success story offers valuable insights into scalable, integrated ticketing solutions.
