West Midlands Metro is launching a new ticketing system designed to make tram travel faster, simpler, and more convenient for passengers across the network.
Validator poles are currently being installed at tram stops, paving the way for a contactless payment system. This upgrade will allow customers to ‘tap in’ and ‘tap out’ using a contactless bank card, travel pass, or smart device to pay for their journey.
The new ticket validators are expected to go live in the New Year. This significant enhancement promises a range of benefits for passengers and aims to promote fairness throughout the network.
Michael Reading-Skilton, Head of Commercial at West Midlands Metro, said:
“Over the next couple of months, customers will see the poles that will hold the validators being installed at tram stops, marking another significant step towards a fairer, more inclusive network.
“As well as making it quicker and more convenient to buy a ticket, the new system will automatically calculate the best fare to cover the cost of the customer’s journey.”
“For those making multiple trips or travelling over several days, the system will cap the total cost to guarantee great value for customers.”
Plans are also underway to integrate the validator system with other regional transport modes, enabling smooth travel between buses and trams throughout the West Midlands.
Once operational, all passengers using a bank card, smart device, Swift Go card, or travel pass will need to tap in at the start and tap out at the end of their tram journey.
This rollout is part of a broader initiative to modernise ticketing across the West Midlands Metro network. Earlier this year, new ticket machines were introduced at tram stops, offering passengers more flexible and convenient payment options. These machines support the ‘Buy Before You Board’ campaign, encouraging customers to purchase tickets before boarding.
The installation of validators marks the next step in enhancing the customer experience, streamlining travel, and making ticketing more accessible for all.
Michael added:
“While the validators are being installed, we would urge all customers to follow any signage alerting them to work being undertaken on the platform, and to follow any pedestrian diversions as required.”
West Midlands Metro remains committed to investing in smarter, more inclusive travel solutions, helping passengers enjoy quicker and more convenient journeys across the region.
