Rail passengers are being thanked for their patience after significant progress was made on the East Coast Main Line’s digital signalling upgrade during the weekend of 22–23 November.
Testing work south of Peterborough focused on the new in-cab digital signalling system, which forms part of the £1.4 billion East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP). This transformative project will replace traditional lineside ‘traffic light’ signals with continuous in-cab information via the European Train Control System (ETCS), paving the way for more punctual and reliable journeys.
The latest testing marked a landmark achievement: for the first time in the UK, two trains operated simultaneously under ETCS control on an inter-city main line. This milestone involved two Great Northern Class 717 commuter units, alongside further trials with a Grand Central Class 180 unit. Engineers also carried out critical data updates across ETCS components, including trackside interlocking, the Radio Block Centre, and signaller screens at York Rail Operating Centre.
Additional work included enabling balises—trackside beacons that communicate with trains—to remain ‘unshielded’, improving efficiency for future testing. Essential infrastructure upgrades also took place, including track renewal at Letchworth Garden City, rerailing at Welwyn and Wymondley, and drainage improvements at Stevenage.

“More work has been done towards the introduction of modern in-cab digital signalling that will deliver a better railway for passengers. We have made a big step forward with our testing programme with us now doing simultaneous train movements under ETCS control.
The opportunity has also been taken to progress vital work to the track and lineside on the East Coast Main Line. We’re sorry to passengers whose journeys were affected over the weekend, and thank them for their patience.”
