A significant phase in the development of the new Okehampton Interchange station has been completed, marking a key step forward in enhancing rail connectivity across Devon and the wider South West.
The installation of the lift shaft, footbridge span, and staircase has now been successfully carried out, giving physical form to the £15 million project. The station, which is being delivered through a partnership between Network Rail and contractor Octavius, is scheduled to open in summer 2026.
Funded through a successful Government bid led by Devon County Council and West Devon Borough Council—with contributions from both authorities—the new station will be a fully accessible addition to the Dartmoor Line. It will complement the existing Okehampton station and offer hourly services linking West Devon, Torridge, and North Cornwall with Exeter and beyond.
Over three midweek nights, a 350-tonne crane was deployed to lift the steel structures from the future station car park, across the railway, and into position. This included the lift shaft, four supporting columns for the staircase, and three staircase sections.
The 25-metre footbridge was then installed in two parts, positioned six metres above the railway. It will connect the 200-space car park to the station’s single platform, which is now supported by 107 coping stones laid along its 100-metre length. Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2026.
Network Rail’s Industry Programme Director, Bogdan Lupu, commented:
“Our plans are now coming to life and the footbridge platform structure is now in place, marking a major milestone in the project’s progress.
Everyone can now see it really coming together and our work continues to get passengers onto the platform as soon as possible.”

Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy added:
“The latest progress at Okehampton Interchange is an exciting step forward for the local community and, thanks to £15m in Government support, it will soon unlock countless benefits, including improved regional connectivity and modern services that local people can rely on.
Alongside the dedicated work of local councils, we're on track with our Plan for Change commitment to deliver growth, jobs and homes through a modern railway that Britain needs and deserves. I look forward to seeing the station open next year."
