Flood-Proof and Future-Ready: Goole Station’s £2M Makeover Is a Game-Changer

Businesses and residents have been thanked for their patience during a £2 million upgrade project at Goole station.

Network Rail have successfully completed improvements to the drainage system – significantly improving flood resilience in the pedestrian subways.

The previous drainage system was prone to blockages due to its limited capacity and vulnerability to debris. This meant the subways suffered from frequent flooding, resulting in accessibility issues during heavy rainfall.

The upgraded system can manage significantly larger volumes of water – helping to keep the subways safe and accessible.

Two independently operated pumping stations and a water holding tank have been installed, providing robust flood protection and reducing the likelihood of service disruptions and costly maintenance.

Matt Shelton, Network Rail route engineer, said:

“This upgrade marks a significant step forward in improving safety and accessibility at Goole station.”

“We’re grateful to the local community for their patience and support throughout the work – this co-operation has been invaluable in allowing us to complete this important upgrade with minimal disruption.”

The upgrades vastly reduce the risk of flooding. Should flooding occur, however, for example during extreme weather, the improvements allow for a much faster and more effective response, minimising disruption and maintenance costs.
