Freightliner Ltd has officially completed its acquisition by the CMA CGM Group, marking a significant milestone for the UK’s rail freight sector. CMA CGM—one of the world’s leading maritime and logistics groups—now adds the UK’s largest intermodal rail freight operator to its global portfolio, strengthening both companies’ ambitions for a more integrated and sustainable supply chain.
This move reinforces Freightliner’s position as the leading intermodal rail freight operator in the United Kingdom, with its expansive network of 10 terminals, around 1.4 million annual rail slots, and 2,000 wagons, as well as one of the UK’s largest electric locomotive fleets.
Both organisations highlighted that the acquisition reflects a shared commitment to delivering a greener, more resilient intermodal offering across the UK and globally.
Freightliner to Maintain Standalone Operations
Despite becoming part of CMA CGM, Freightliner will continue to operate as a standalone, multi-customer intermodal service provider, delivering national rail freight services that remove thousands of tonnes of CO₂ every year through its large-scale, electric-powered fleet.
Strengthening the Future of UK Intermodal Logistics
Chris Lawrenson, Managing Director – Freightliner, said:

"By combining our deep UK rail expertise with CMA CGM’s maritime reach and global logistics capabilities, we are building a more resilient, integrated and future-ready supply chain for our customers. Our teams will continue to operate with the same autonomy, professionalism and reliability that Freightliner customers trust, now supported by the long-term vision and resources of a world-class logistics group.”
What Happens to Heavy Haul and European Operations?

Other parts of the wider group—including:
