TransPennine Express Partners with Northern Businesses to Refresh Nova 1 Fleet

TransPennine Express (TPE) has begun rolling out a major refurbishment programme across its Nova 1 fleet, with businesses from across the North playing a key role in delivering a fresh new look for passengers.

The programme will see all 19 Nova 1 trains fitted with newly designed seat covers and cushions between July and the end of 2026, enhancing both passenger comfort and the visual appeal of the fleet.

Drawing inspiration from the distinctive shard shapes used in TPE's branding and the striking exterior livery of the Nova 1 trains, the new seating design has been carefully developed to complement the existing interiors while creating a contemporary and modern travelling environment.

A number of regional companies have contributed to the project. Sheffield-based Diamond Group is supplying the new seat covers and cushions, while Mirfield textile manufacturer Camira supported the colour selection and material sampling process. The seating design itself was created in partnership with Hitachi Rail by Derby industrial designers David Gordon and Andy Sykes.

Accessibility was a central consideration throughout the development process. High-contrast colour schemes have been incorporated to assist visually impaired passengers, while the materials have been selected to withstand the rigours of daily operation and deliver long-term durability.

Paul Staples, Engineering, Safety and Sustainability Director at TPE, said:

“I am really pleased that we are starting to deploy this fresh new look for everyone travelling with us on our Nova 1 trains.

"We have worked with Hitachi and a number of businesses local to our network so this project not only makes the trains look better for our customers but supports the communities that we serve.

"We will be looking for opportunities for similar investments in our other fleets in the future but while we look for those opportunities we are working with our suppliers to increase our levels of cleaning and replacement of the current seat cover designs.”

The refurbishment is also delivering wider economic benefits, supporting local manufacturing and creating employment opportunities within the rail supply chain.

Jenny Dempsey, Managing Director of Diamond Rail Services, said:

“We’re incredibly proud to be supporting TransPennine Express with this refurbishment programme.

“As a Sheffield-based business, it’s especially rewarding to work with a train operator that serves our local community. The programme has enabled us to create new jobs and invest in growing our team, demonstrating the value of keeping investment within the local supply chain.

"Working alongside TPE, Hitachi Rail and fellow Yorkshire business Camira has been a fantastic example of what can be achieved when regional expertise comes together.”

The investment highlights TPE's commitment to improving the customer experience while strengthening regional supply chains, with passengers expected to see the upgraded interiors rolled out across the entire Nova 1 fleet by the end of the year.
